While Microsoft discussed the core features of its new devices, doing a deep dive on the products in a two-hour show is not possible. Now, Microsoft has looked at the upcoming Surface devices in more detail through a Microsoft Mechanics video. Specifically, the video focuses on the Surface Laptop 3, Surface Pro X, and Surface Pro 7. The Surface Duo and Surface Neo are not discussed as they will not be launched until holiday season 2020. Looking at the video, Surface engineer Jochen Siegl and host Jeremy Chapman look at new features on Surface.
Siegl points to design changes made across the products, and internal updates such as new processors. At around 13-minutes, the video also shows how the Surface devices have similarities across the range.
Surface Device Details
Surface Pro X: The Pro X is the best-looking Surface Pro device ever made. Its sleek and small, despite packing a 13-inch edge-to-edge PixelSense screen. That display has 2880×1920 pixels and 267PPI but is still tiny at only 5.3mm and 774 grams. As we expected, this is a full Windows on ARM Surface device thanks to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx running under the box. Furthermore, the Surface Pro X is the first ever Windows device to a full AI engine. Surface Pro X leverages the 8cx to have Instant On and LTE Advanced Pro. Surface Laptop 3: he third generation Surface Laptop does get the 10th Gen Intel-core processor. Microsoft says the device is three times more powerful than the Apple MacBook Air. Intel’s CPU is coupled with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage. As predicted, Microsoft also introduced a 15-inch variant of the Surface Laptop 3. This version retains the same 3:2 aspect ratio as the smaller model despite that larger IPS display. Also as predicted, AMD Ryzen is on board with a Microsoft Surface edition of the processer. Panos described it as AMD’s most powerful processor ever. Surface Pro 7: The Surface Pro 7 runs Intel’s 10th-gen Ice Lake CPUs. Looking at the entry level variant, the Pro 7 starts with the usual Core i3 processor coupled with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. Next up is an i5 version with 8GB of RAM and the same 128GB storage solutions. However, with this device customers can configure up to 256GB SSD.
